The Green Line B train serving Boston University

The above-ground ("trolley") part of the B train route.

Travel times from Government Center to Boston College (end of B line).

MBTARiding the T
  • The subway or train in Boston is called “The T.”
  • The T has four lines: Green, Red, Blue, and Orange.
  • The Green Line is divided into four different lines (or trains): B, C, D, and E. B.U. is located on the B Line. (Only the B trains on the Green Line will get you to CELOP or anywhere else at BU.)
  • “Inbound” refers to any train going in towards the center of the city (Government Center) on any line.
  • “Outbound” refers to any train going out or away from the center of the city on any line.
  • There are three ways to pay for the T.
    • If you are getting on a train above-ground, you can pay with cash (exact change only).
    • You can also pay with a CharlieTicket, which is made of paper and can be bought at any underground T station.
    • The best way to pay is with a plastic CharlieCard, which you can get at some underground stations.
  • T fare is $2.00 if you pay with cash-on-board or a CharlieTicket. It is $1.70 with a CharlieCard.
  • A good way to save money is to purchase a monthly T pass using a rechargeable CharlieCard. A monthly pass is good for unlimited travel on the subway and local buses, and costs $59 per month. Important: Do not punch any holes in the CharlieCard!
  • A good place to buy a monthly pass is at Shaw’s supermarket, 1065 Commonwealth Avenue, a few blocks from CELOP. For more locations, check the MBTA website.
  • You can purchase a weekly MBTA pass for $15. It allows you to take the bus, subway, Commuter Rail (zone 1A only), and Inner Harbor ferry boats as much as you want for 7 days. You can buy a 7-day pass at any underground T station.
