Cinematheque: An Evening with Julia Cox

Julia Cox most recently wrote and executive produced the Netflix drama NYAD, an adaptation of Diana Nyad’s memoir, “Find A Way,” starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster. Both Bening and Foster garnered Oscar nominations for their performances, and Cox was nominated for a WGA award for her writing. In addition, Cox has written films and television for Paramount, Sony, TriStar, Fox, Amazon, and Netflix, as well as indie labels such as Sister, Participant, Black Bear, L.D., and River Road. She's known for her original work – character-driven, tense dramas – as well as her adaptations of novels and true stories. Whether based on real people, pulled from fiction, or wholly invented, Cox's protagonists are often women on the fringes, grappling with what it takes to create a meaningful life. Recently, she adapted the seminal feminist noir IN A LONELY PLACE; the harrowing memoir of former Westboro Baptist Church member Megan Phelps-Roper, UNFOLLOW; and Kristin Hannah’s beloved best-seller THE GREAT ALONE. Cox’s original spec scripts DO NO HARM and THE TAKEAWAY appeared on the annual Black List.In 2021, she was named one of Variety's Ten Screenwriters to Watch, and in 2024, she was awarded the Sun Valley Film Festival’s High Scribe Award. Cox received a Writing MFA from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, where she won the Mary Pickford Scholarship, the Josh Schwartz Scholarship, and the Edward Small Writing Award. This Cinematheque is hosted by FTV screenwriting professor Debbie Danielpour.
