Breakfast Seminar: Technology Commercialization in a Startup and Quantum Cascade LasersBU Student Chapter of OSA & SPIE industry seminar seriesFree breakfast provided!Join the BU Student Chapter of the OSA & SPIE for a seminar talk by Dr. Christian Pfluegl, co-founder and head of R&D at EOS Photonics.Dr. Pfluegl will be here to discuss some of the challenges and opportunities in technology commercialization in a startup setting based on his experiences co-founding EOS Photonics (http://eosphotonics.com/), as well as their breakthrough Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) technology.EOS Photonics is located in Cambridge, Mass., and is one of a handful of companies developing commercial QCLs. QCLs represent a breakthrough technology, enabling for the first time monolithic laser sources that can span the mid-infrared to terahertz spectral regions. These frequency ranges are extremely significant for defense and biotechnology sensing applications as well as environmental monitoring. The introduction of robust, versatile, tiny chip-based laser sources promises to dramatically impact these important fields.Dr. Pfluegl is a co-founder and current Vice President of Research and Development at Eos Photonics, where he advances the state of the art in QCLs by demonstrating how new design and fabrication techniques can enhance QCL commercialization. Prior to founding EOS, Dr. Pfluegl was a research associate at Harvard University in the group of Federico Capasso, who co-invented the QCL at Bell Laboratories in 1994. Dr. Pfluegl's PhD work was conducted in the group of Prof. G. Strasser at the Technical University of Vienna.
