Overview
Whereas women are well represented at the higher levels of administration (deans, provosts), department chairs in CAS and ENG are disproportionately male. Of department chairs, 100% are male in Engineering, whereas 100% are female in Sargent. CAS chairs in 2010-11 consist of 3 females (1 PROF and 2 ASCP's) and 21 males (20 PROF's and 1 ASCP). Thus, 12.5% of the department chairs in CAS are female, as of 2010-11. Compare with the history in CAS:
In CAS, male full professors are 4.4 times more likely than female full professors to serve as department chair. Furthermore, 2/3 of the females who serve as chair are at the Associate Professor level (as compared with only 1/21 of the males).Female scientists have historically been under-represented in the role of department chair at BU. There was not a single female chair of any of the Natural Science departments in CAS or ENG during the 11-year period from AY 2000-01 through AY 2010-11.
