Lynn O’Brien Hallstein serves as Assistant Provost for General Education, is a Professor of Rhetoric in the College of General Studies and is affiliated faculty with both the Center for Innovation in Social Science, and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. Most recently, she also served as the Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Development and as the director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Teaching & Learning in the College of General Studies.

As Assistant Provost, Professor O’Brien Hallstein oversees the BU Hub, the University’s general education program. She leads the ongoing assessment efforts of the Hub and collaborates with faculty and staff across the University in the continuing curricular development of Hub programs and courses. Professor O’Brien Hallstein chairs the BU Hub Council, the faculty body that oversees the governance and assessment of the Hub, and co-chairs the General Education Committee of the University Council, whose faculty members approve and review all courses approved for inclusion in the Hub.

Professor O’Brien Hallstein is an expert in motherhood studies and her extensive scholarship in both motherhood studies and communication has helped define and shape the emerging interdisciplinary work between these fields. She has authored multiple award-winning books, widely-cited journal articles, essays, and chapters centering on contemporary motherhood rhetoric.
