Japanese Women’s Leadership Initiative Intern
The Japanese Women’s Leadership Initiative (JWLI) is a project within the Fish Family Foundation and
empowers Japanese women to become leaders and to make positive social change in Japan. Founded in 2006, JWLI provides Japanese women leaders with a Boston-based four-week practical training on nonprofit management. JWLI is at an exciting moment as it began to plan its 10th anniversary year in 2016 with two events in Boston and Japan, and to develop ideas for its next 10 years from 2017. JWLI seeks a self-starting, part-time intern who will touch all aspects of JWLI. This position provides a student with hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, especially in the area of communication, program operation, and event planning.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Program Manager to develop and implement communication strategy using a JWLI website, newsletter, and Facebook
  • Manage the creation and maintenance of quarterly newsletters, website and Facebook.
  • Support the Boston team and the Tokyo-based implementation partner to plan for events to be held in Boston and Tokyo for JWLI’s 10th anniversary in 2016, including the budget management, the development of an event timeline, and working with vendors
  • Contact and establish relationships with the media in Japan and the U.S, and develop a database
  • Assist with planning and hosting JWLI related events and meetings
  • Translate materials between Japanese and English
  • Design flyers, e-vites and other marketing materials
  • Assist with general office tasks (filing, copying, mass mailings, organizing, etc.)

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written, oral communication skills in Japanese and English
  • Strong interest in the nonprofit sector and social entrepreneurship in Japan and the U.S.
  • A passion for women’s empowerment and leadership in Japan and the U.S.
  • Must be computer literate (working knowledge of Word, Powerpoint, and Excel)
  • Knowledge and/or past experience with WordPress and Mailchimp is a plus
  • Experience in a high energy non-profit setting or a previous internship in a related field is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program, preferably in communications, gender studies, international relations, or a related field

Internship Details:

  • 15 to 20 hours per week beginning in early September
  • Office located downtown Boston
  • Unpaid
