The Planning Committee—Members of the Symposium

J. Mark Scearce is the Director of the Music Department at NC State. Prior appointments were on the music faculties of the Universities of Hawaii, North Texas, and Southern Maine, among others. The composer of sixty instrumental works and over a hundred text settings, his works include ten compositions for orchestra, seven for chorus, two band, two operas, and two ballets.

Scearce has won five international music competitions, is the recipient of five advanced degrees in music and philosophy, and has five commercial recordings available on Delos, Warner Bros, Capstone, Centaur, and Equilibrium labels. A sixth, the Sony 4-channel SACD of his first string quartet "Y2K," is only available online at frystreetquartet.com.

For the 06/07 season, Scearce will hear the premiere of his first opera locally on the ARTS NOW series, will be in attendance in New York City for the premiere of a commissioned work in Merkin Hall at the Kaufman Center, and will complete a week’s residency in Iowa where four of his orchestral works will be performed. Scearce is also Coordinator of the NC Symphony’s 75th anniversary commissioning project, POSTCARDS, unveiling six premieres by NC composers this season.
