The Planning Committee—Members of the Symposium

Having received degrees from Boston University's School of Fine and Applied Arts and School of Education, Dr. Sandra Nicolucci’s career centered in Boston area public school systems until her recent retirement.  Most recently she served as the K-12 Director of Performing Arts in the Wellesley, MA Public Schools where she supervised programs in music, drama, and dance for eighteen years. The Wellesley program was twice cited as one of the "100 Best Communities for Music Education" in the US.

Previously Dr. Nicolucci taught music and served as arts administrator in the Newton and Brookline, MA school systems. She was a member of the Music Education faculty at the Boston Conservatory for over 30 years teaching courses in methods, developing a field-based internship program, and working with student teachers before joining the Boston University music education faculty in 2005.

Dr. Nicolucci was a member of the first team to develop the Arts Curriculum Framework for Massachusetts. She is a frequent clinician specializing in presentations on standards-based curriculum development, assessment, public relations, classroom management, music program evaluation, instructional strategies, and a variety of other music education topics. She serves as program reviewer for school music departments as well as consultant and facilitator for music curriculum development initiatives.

She has been involved in strategic planning with the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s partnership with Boston Schools. Her work with arts-centered pilot and charter schools in Boston has been received with enthusiasm. She is an active member of the MA Music Educators Association (MMEA) having served on many conference planning committees, state and district boards, and as leader of the affiliate association, Administrators in Music Education (AIME). From MMEA Dr. Nicolucci has received the Lowell Mason Award, the Visionary Leadership Award, as well as its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award. Boston University awarded her its Distinguished Alumna Award, and the National Music Foundation honored her innovative work in curriculum development with the American Music Education Initiative Award. Dr. Nicolucci is honored to be involved in the planning of the Tanglewood II Symposium and eagerly anticipates its impact on new generations of music educators.
