The Planning Committee—Members of the Symposium

Bernadette Colley, Associate Professor of Music Education holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with applied concentration in Voice and Piano from Syracuse University, a Master of Arts in School Music from McGill University, and a Doctor of Education in Teaching and Learning from Harvard University. In addition to her current post at Boston University, she has taught at Harvard University, McGill University, the Massachusetts College of Art, and K-12 public schools in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts. She has served as a Music Evaluator for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and remains active as a choral director in the Boston area.

Professor Colley is the founder and principal of Colley Consulting, a research consultancy specializing in evaluation and policy design in arts education since 1989 (www.colleyconsulting.com). She is the recipient of the Reston Prize awarded by the National Associations of Schools of Dance, Music, Theatre, Art and Design.

Dr. Colley was an Arts Education Fellow at the National Endowment for the Arts in 1988, and was chosen subsequently to testify before the National Committee on the Arts on the program's reauthorization. Her research has appeared in the Journal of Research in Music Education, the Arts Education Policy Review, Update, Chamber Music, and other publications. She is an author of Minds Alive: Teachers as Scholars (Council for Basic Education) - case studies reflecting the importance of intellectual rejuvenation for teachers.

Her interests involve arts education policy development, and interdisciplinary studies in music and music education. Outside of her professional work, she is a swimmer, swing dancer, and skier.
