Michelle
Hogan, frequencies
editor
Michelle
Hogan got her start in journalism early. As an elementary school
student, she co-edited the now defunct Narly News, a weekly publication
based in her grandparents’ Glendale, N.Y. home with a tiny
but doting circulation of parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
Michelle and her younger cousin planned to buy Grandma a toaster
or a Nintendo game system with the profits, which they secured
in a miniature treasure chest. Over the years, Michelle continued
to write and also developed an interest in science and medicine.
She peppered her physician father with questions, often about
her own symptoms when she was young, fitting the stereotype of
doctor’s children as precocious hypochondriacs. A college
internship at the pharmaceutical journal U.S. Pharmacist and an
endocrinology course that focused heavily on writing showed her
she could combine her two interests. Later she enrolled in graduate
school at Boston University’s Knight Center for Science
and Medical Journalism. In addition to U.S. Pharmacist, Michelle’s
work has appeared in Newsday, where she interned last summer;
the Worcester Telegram & Gazette; and student publications.
A former part-time medical assistant, Michelle is particularly
interested in health and how changes in the delivery of medical
care affect patients. She has written about the quality of health
care information on the Internet, prescription drugs going over
the counter and how health-care financing affects community health
centers. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Michelle lives in Boston
and Long Island, N.Y.

The internet has changed
the way people manage their health - but not always for the
better.
Ditching
the doctor
The need for profits is pushing pharmaceutical companies into
new strategies for prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Children exposed to violence have shown developmental
