What is Service Learning?

Service learning is a rewarding experience that combines classroom teaching and learning with real community involvement through action, research, or work.

BU’s Report of the Task Force on General Education emphasized that service learning “helps students apply and integrate the learning they do in the classroom and cultivate essential knowledge, skills, and habits of mind.”

An essential component of service learning is that all participants benefit. With assistance from BU and a community partner organization, the ultimate goal is building sustainable communities, thereby strengthening a local population and your own academic and personal development.
