What is Sargent Service Learning?

An essential component of service learning is that all participants benefit.
Sargent’s International Service Learning Program is an educational opportunity that integrates meaningful community service, personal and professional growth in an international setting to deepen student learning about global health issues.
We partner with EDU Africa and local community organizations (e.g., clinics, public health departments, schools, nonprofits) on the following:
Reciprocal partnerships: Community partners and students both benefit; service is driven by community-identified needs.
Academic integration: Service activities reinforce health concepts such as social determinants of health, health equity, ethics, and systems of care.
Ethical engagement: Emphasis on professionalism, confidentiality, cultural humility, and appropriate boundaries.
Reflection: Guided reflection helps students critically examine assumptions, power dynamics, and the impact of health systems on individuals and communities.
Equity focus: Experiences highlight health disparities and structural factors shaping health outcomes.
