Process and Pleading
Plaintiff counted that defendants came with force and arms and assaulted the king's palace.
Defendants pleaded not guilty.
Martin JCP argued that the sheriff did not have jurisdiction or power on this writ.
Two defendants showed that they were servants of the Staple and pleaded that by statute the Court did not have jurisdiction over them.
A third defendant pleaded that the failure of jurisdiction over the other two should abate the writ as to all defendants, and offered to demur.

Abstract Context
John Hals was appointed JKB on 23 Jan. 1424.
Commentary & Paraphrase
Sjt Paston came to the bar, and showed the case again to the Justices, and said that the clerks of Common Pleas were in doubt whether they ought to make process to the sheriff of Middlesex or to the Warden of the Palace
Hals JCP: the sheriff has nothing to do with the Palace, and the Warden of the Palace is a minister immediate to the King's Court
Manuscripts Mss Notes Editing Notes Errors
Statham Triall 33 quoted the writ 'insultum fecit apud Westmonasterium' and said that Sjt Rolf (for P?) prayed a Venire facias to the warden of the palace, as immediate officer to the sheriff, and that Babington CJCP spoke of trespass in the Cinque Ports. Statham Jurisdiccion 18 also ascribed a speech for plaintiff to Sjt Rolf.
