Talk to be delivered by Gabriela Shalev, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations. Ambassador Gabriela Shalev is Israel’s fourteenth Permanent Representative to the United Nations. She began her tenure on September 3, 2008, marking the first time a woman was appointed to this post. Shalev began her career as a clerk at the Supreme Court of Israel from 1964 to 1966 and at the legal department of the Jewish Agency in 1967. After receiving admittance to the Israeli Bar in 1968, she became chief legal editor of the Judgements of the Supreme Court of Israel from 1968, and served in this post through 1980. Since 1980 she has held a wide variety of positions in both the public and private sectors and made a name for herself as one of the leading experts on contract law and comparative law. Shalev has provided legal advice and wrote legal opinions in the field of contract law and civil law for public institutions, arbitrators and lawyers, in Israel and around the world. In addition, Shalev was Professor of Law at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and taught, as a visiting professor, contract law and comparative law in universities in the United States, Europe and Canada. She is the author of nine books and more than one hundred articles in Hebrew and in English. Please join us for what promises to be an intriguing and thought-provoking lecture.
