Josh Karlowicz

Josh Karlowicz is an 11th grade Physics teacher at the Greater Lawrence Technical School in Andover, Massachusetts. Two years ago, he participated in the RET program, conducting research with Keith Brown in the Photonics Center; trying to crystalize calcium for medical applications. He learned a lot about 3D printing and actually purchased two 3D printers last year that are now used in his classroom to expose his students to this technology.

This summer, Josh has been enhancing his curriculum, focusing mainly on an electromagnetism unit that will include hands-on lessons for his students to engage in various activities. They will explore spray masks & circuits, touch sensors, and even piano keyboards. He plans to apply his new spectroscopy knowledge to his Physics lessons, as well.

Next year, Josh will be revising his plans after testing them throughout this school year and would like to return for another RET summer if it all works out that way.

Josh highly recommends this program to interested teachers. “You must be patient as you learn the machines and begin the research, but over time it starts to make sense and you feel more confident about your abilities as a student, and teacher, and scientist!”
