Thomas Bifano
Center Director, Professor (BME, ECE, ME, MSE)
Dr. Bifano directs the Boston University Photonics Center (BUPC), a core facility and academic center of excellence comprised of forty-nine faculty members from eight academic departments and sixteen staff staff members. He leads BUPC programs for education, scholarly research and development of advanced photonics device prototypes for commercial and military applications. His research focuses on design, manufacturing, and the use of optical instruments. For example, shaping light using deformable mirrors (DMs).
Additionally, Dr. Bifano’s lab has pioneered development DMs that improve resolution in telescopes, microscopes, and ophthalmoscopes, and that allow modulation of optical wavefronts for communication and beam forming. He also does work on biomedical imaging applications and microscopy.
