the brand of criticism that judges works of art by non - aesthetic, psycho–
logical, or (God forbid!) psychoanalytical criteria. If criticism has not
quite degenerated in to lunacy, if litera tu re has no t become the hand–
maiden of ideology but remained a dream and an escape, a play of the
