ASSOCIATION OF LITERARY
SCHOLARS AND CRITICS
at
the
Radisson Hotel Metrodome
Minneapolis, September 22.24, 1996
Conference speakers will include some of the many
distinguished literary scholars, critics and writers among the
Association' s members; for example, Robert Alter, Sven
Birkerts, Steven Botterill, Paul Cantor, John M. Ellis, John
Hollander, Ricardo Quinones, Roger Shattuck, Mark Strand
and Rosanna Warren. The keynote address will be delivered
by Bernard Knox, Director Emeritus of the Center for
Hellenic Studies, Harvard University.
The Association of Literary Scholars and Critics has
been fonned because of a deep and widespread concern
about the present state of literary studies. Its purpose is to
foster appreciation of the literary imagination, of the value
of literary study, and of a shared literary culture. The
ALSC will hold to broad conceptions of literature rather
than the narrow, highly politicized ones often encountered
today. It will serve as a forum for anyone with a serious
scholarly or critical interest in literature, and welcomes
both classicists and modernists, independent and academic
literary critics, as well as creative writers, editors and
publishers. The Association now numbers over twelve
hundred members, and is growing rapidly.
