Jean van Heijenoort was a well-known
mathematician and historian of symbolic
logic. He taught at Brandeis University
and was associated with the Houghton
Library at Harvard. It was known only to
a few that for many years J.v.H. had been
Trotsky's secretary and bodyguard in
exile. As a friend of Andre Breton, Diego
Rivera and Frida Kahlo, he became an
interested observer of the unrest in the
world of political ideas and of the arts.
The book is a vivid account of the inter–
relation of arts and politics and is a valu–
able contribution to the history of ideas
from an unexpected angle.
"An
engrossing account of an extraordinary
life. Tactful, sympathetic, but relentless,
Feferman has compelled her brilliant and
complicated subject to open his many secrets
to her understanding and ours."- Diane Wood
