maining up-to-date, given the speed of soci31-po liti cal transformations in
the forme rl y Commun ist st3tes . Much has transpired since this book was
written that alte rs or qualifies certain of the auth or's "scenarios" for
change. It is, for exa mpl e, not clear if indeed a "grand coa liti o n ," or a
new ruling class composed of emergi ng entreprene urs and former mem–
bers of the Communist bureaucracy, has emerged or is in the process of
emerging. Nevertheless, this is an invaluable study for anyone seeking a
deeper understanding of the nature and problems of the transition from
Communist to pluralist systems. The book comes w ith a useful summary
of the major events in Hun g:Hian hi story, and an excell ent bibliography
that includes both Hung3rian and Western sources. Last but not least, this
is a thought-provoking book - and Gr more than a case study of political
change - because it also addresses and helps to settl e a major issue of o ur
times: the reformability of Communist systems.
