glancing in the rear view mirror. One of his eyelids had developed a tic.
He said, "We should have done this long ago."
"Yes," Charlotte said, staring ahead at dry sun-lit rushing pavement.
"Long ago."
That night in their own bed they made love for the first time in weeks,
or months. "I love you," Barry murmured, as if making a vow, "- no one
but you."
Tears started out of the corners of Charlotte's tightly shut eyes.
Afterward Barry slept heavily, sweating through the night. From time
to time he kicked at the covers, but he never woke. Beside him Charlotte lay
staring into the dark. What would become of them now? Something tickled
her lips, a bit oflint, a hair, and though she brushed it irritably away the tin–
gling sensation remained. What would become of them, now?
