Pass

Rachel Hadas
I
The poems in Rachel Hadas's new book are united by a common preoc–
cupation with passage-passage variously construed. In Section I, the four
seasons are glimpsed in turn through the lenses of several types of per-
sonal associations, especially parenthood. In Section II, the phrase "pass
it on" recalls the game "telephone," in which a word is whispered by one
speaker to another. Finally, in Section III "pass it on" comes to signify
transition-whether between spring and summer, city and country, youth
and age, presence and absence, or life and death.

My Name on the Wind
Selected Poems of Diego Valeri
Translated
by
Michael Palma
Diego Valeri's poetry has been widely admired in Italy and elsewhere
in Europe, but little of it has been translated into English. This bilingual
edition is a selection of fifty-one poems representing all phases of Valeri's
extraordinarily long career, from 1910 to 1976. Valeri's work is distin–
guished by directness, clarity, and strong emotion; his imagery is vivid
and precise, and his favored (although not exclusive) themes are romantic
love and the beauties of nature.

W. S.
Di Piero
In this remarkable collection of essays,
W.
S.
Di
Piero draws us toward
fresh encounters with literary artists from both sides of the Atlantic–
Dante, Keats, Leopardi, Whitman, Pound, Wllliam Carlos Williams, Pavese,
Sartre, William and Henry James, and others-as well as with fihrunakers
Robert Altman and Michelangelo Antonioni.
Di
Piero's themes range from
cultural estrangement and the nature of work to the political element in the
life of the poetic imagination, the derangements peculiar to American
consciousness, and the ambitions of contemporary American poetry.
