most important positions with National Socialists_ Immediately,
during the night of March 11 th, the deputy to the head of the
bureaucrats was called to the commissar-mayor in order to discuss
and put through the first ordinances _" The same was true for all
other groups_
Sauerwald was appointed by the
Staatskommissar
of
Private Enter–
prises,
in line with PaL 1, #1 of the "Law of April 13, 1938 regulating
the duties of commissars and commissary supervisors ." At the sug–
gestion of the head of the German-Austrian medical association and
over the objections of Sauerwald, Ernest Jones, Muller-Braun–
schweig, and Marie Bonaparte, the so-called psychoanalytic "enter–
prises" were to be liquidated .
In a letter from Professor Matthias Heinrich Goring (Goring's
brother-in-law and after 1936 head of German psychotherapy) to the
non-Jewish Viennese psychoanalyst August Aichhorn, there is a
handwritten comment: "I am primarily interested in
an
Ausgleich
of
the different (psychoanalytic) directions in the service of a German
psychotherapy; it can neither be based on something Jewish (Freud
and Adler) nor on something Eastern (lung); it must have its own
stamp
(eigenartig)."
By the law of August 25, 1938 the commissarship for
Vereine,
Organisationen und Verbande
was dissolved and the remaining funds of
the W.P.V. , about AS 800 .000 were confiscated. Its facilities were
turned over to the Institut for Orientalism of the University of
Vienna. At the planned liquidation of the publishing house a loan of
AS 14.214 by the W. P .V . already had been written off, along with a
loan by the International Psychoanalytic Association of AS 38.038.
On May 20, 1938, as an addenda to the list of Freud's assets Indra
states:
The International Psychoanalytic publishing house was losing
money for years . The losses were made up every year with
foreign funds . An evaluation of assets is impossible, a balance
sheet was no longer kept on Dec. 31,1937 because the

confiscated the books , halted all activities and noted a loss of

110.000. The taxpayer therefore turned over his entire assets
(see Appendix A) to the lawyer for liquidation, Dr. Hans Mann .
Dr. Mann's request was denied and Sauerwald was appointed as liq–
