my coffee \.lp to my study, as usual. I dialed the phone number of
the data center and was connected with the computer. The golf–
ball head of the terminal nodded and printed:
PLEASE SIGN IN
I signed my customer number, my operator number and my code
name "novel." I had used that word to remind myself to keep
working at
~he
novel. After the word "novel," I now put a
semicolon anp a new code word.
The system was friendly as usual.
It
typed my name,
reminded me of tab settings and margins.
It
asked me for
distribution codes. I pushed the return button. The golf-ball was
then supposed
to
nod, instead it printed:
Your dreaql?
My dream?
l
had had a dream that night. I dreamt I was looking
at a page of a Swedish weekly. It had a picture of my brother.
It
said, in Swedjsh, the word for "moose hunting." It said, in
Swedish, the word for "crime" and "violence." In the dream I
thought, "That is my brother." Then the dream faded. I typed
the words ;
My dream?
The terrpinal printed:
You dreamed you were looking at a Swedish weekly paper.
There was a picture of your brother and the words for "moose
hunting," "violence" and "crime." You thought, "This is my
brother. "
I called my husband. His secretary answered.
"Didn't he tell you he was going to Washington?"
I had forgotten that David was going to Washington for the
day and that he would probably have to spend the night there, to
tend to some additional business the following morning. I said,
"Oh, yes. I remember."
