The stage was set in some preexisting never-never land. All I had to
do was walk in, take off my shoes, and be made happy. The Orient
would take care ofK. and the rest.
She appeared for lunch dressed in a bit of white curtain material
that she had ripped off a yardgoods store and cleverly fashioned into
a prettily tucked breast-conscious suit. She was , I gathered , at a
crossroads. Brought up in Santa Rosa in a lower-middle-class Italian–
Irish family-a Chinese girl across the street, her best friend in high
school, was also called Ling-she had gone to Whittier, then
Berkeley, where as an undergraduate she had gotten married . But
her husband must have decided that she had married the ghetto
and not him, and that therefore it was perfectly all right
to
split .
At the moment that I had met her this had turned into its own
bitter dead end and she was looking to the East as a means of re–
attaching herself both
to
nature and her own sexual identity . She
had found a guru who ran a Berkeley vegetarian restaurant and he
had convinced her to put her healing hands to public use . Hence
the request for a recommendation so that she could get a job at the

Cauldron, which aptly suited her basket-shaped body . Not long
