SUSAN SONTAG
LENA:
I'm willing to lose if I know it's also possible to win.
Medium shot of Martin, showing three-fourths of his face. He
is off-center, on the right side of the image, and faces diagonally
across the frame.
MARTIN:
But I'm not sure
I'm
willing to lose any more, Lena
...
I
may not be ready to fight you.
LENA (off ) :
Don' t fight.
Martin pauses before answering.
MARTIN:

LENA (off ) :
Do you know why I'm here?
Medium shot of Lena, the reverse of the previous shot. She is
off-center, on the left side of the image, facing diagnoally toward the
right.
MARTIN (off ):
Yes.
LENA :
And your answer?
The camera moves a little to the left, to put Lena in the center

sponse.
MARTIN (off ) :
No.

on the floor, and a narrow bed with wooden sides (or perhaps just
a mattress on the floor against the wall ), with a crucifix hanging
above it on the wall.
A
kerosene lamp at the foot of the bed throws
strong shadows. There is a Russian icon in front of the lamp; lined
upon the floor or on windowsills are several of Carl's collections:
shells, rocks, driftwood. . . . The shot shows only the lower part of
Carl's bed, on the right side of the frame. The bed, heaped with
blankets, is so messy that we don't see he's lying there. The image
