NEW DIRECTIONS 20
Anthology
The current New Directions "Annual" carries on the tradition of its
predecessors. Since 1936, when the first number in the series appeared,
each volume has been an international literary showcase for experimental
and unusual writing. Some contributors have been young and unpub–
lished; others have been leaders of significant modern movements. All
of them have one common goal-to extend the horizons of contemporary
literature.
New Directions 20
includes:
THOMAS MERTON: "Symbolism: Communication or Communion," a
long and important essay which goes to the core of a crucial issue–
the function and malfunction of language.
DENISE LEVERTOV: "Some Notes on Organic Form" examines the open
forms of poetry inspired by the theories of Charles Olson and the
practice of William Carlos Williams.
ALAN BURNS: A substantial excerpt from the novel
Europe After the
Rain
by an exciting young British writer which enlarges the range
of Surrealist fiction.
IAN HAMILTON FINLAY:
The Dancers Inherit the Party
is the complete
text of this Scottish poet's first book-never before published in
this country.
MANUEL BANDEIRA: Translations of the poetry of Brazil's leading poet.
MARY FELDHAUS-WEBER:
The Virgin, The Lizard, and The Lamb,
a play.
