HART CRANE: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE POETRY
. Herbert
A.
Leibowitz
Hart Crane published during his lifetime two volumes of verse which
contain some of the most original American poetry of this century. But in
spite of the rich imagery and verbal ingenuity of his poems, traditional
criticism of Crane has marked him as a careless, incoherent poet who cul–
tivated emotion for its own sake. In this book, the first full-length analysis
of Crane's style, Mr. Leibowitz studies Crane's diction, imagery, syntax,
verse forms, and metrics, and shows him to be no mere sensationalist re–
sorting to trickery, but a poet whose "flexible and musical language binds
the lyric of dream to the rich circumstantiality of this world."
