LETTERS
FREUDIAN SLIP
Sirs:
In his article, "Dreamers"
(Parti–
san Review,
Summer 1967, p. 345),
Leslie Fiedler states that "Joseph,
however, Freud does not ever men–
tion." In
The I11 terpretation
0/
Dreams,
however, the following
footnote appears:
It will be noticed that the name
of Josef plays a great part in my
dreams
(cf.
the dream about my
uncle [pp. 171 ff.]). M y own ego
finds it very easy to hide itself
behind people of that name, since
Joseph was the name of a man
famous in the Bible as an inter–
preter of dreams. (Avon edition,
1965, p. 522.)
Freud, therefore, not only mentions
the biblical Joseph, but points to
the frequency of the name in his
dreams, to his own frequent iden–
tification with the figure, and to
the main fact that the grounds of
identification are their like capaci–
ties to interpret dreams.
David Bleich
Mr. Fiedler replies:
Thanks.
