MISTAKEN IDENTITY
SlRS:
I shall be grateful if you will permit
me to communicate the following in–
formation.
I n his recent book,
Waiting For the
End,
Leslie Fiedler speaks of my story
"Of This Time, Of That Place," and
says that its chief character, the stu–
dent Tertan, is a representation of Al–
len Ginsberg. This is not the case. My
story was first published in
Partisan
Review
in the issue of J anuary-February
1943; Allen Ginsberg was admitted to
Columbia College in J uly 1943 and I
did not make his acquaintance as one
of my students until three years later.
I should perhaps add that I see no
slightest resemblance between Tertan
and Mr. Ginsberg.
I have told Mr. Fiedler of his error;
he agrees with me that it should be
publicly corrected and h-as urged me to
write this letter.
