Shimansky family is both artificial and arbitrary: he is plunked down,
quite unbelievably, in the middle of the novel as combination moral
spokesman and
deus ex machina
whose purpose is to render the under–
lying, implicit issues all too explicit and, at the same time, to formalize
and resolve the plot. He is manipulated, in short, for both thematic and
structural purposes, and the manipulation, which undermines his effec–
tiveness as a character, not only shows but also makes the whole novel
unbelievable. He becomes more of a "thing" (a device, a voice, a
gimmick) than a person, and the pattern of events focused on him be–
comes comparably unreal, mechanical, incredible.
