ed but ennaved,
At the town drunk, a prodigal
stench-sunk pig
Among the silly sheep, the
shaved and waved.
But they bred the swine. Their
fine gold bent the twig:
The inclined tree will beg, is
ashamed to dig.
Here is the summit of his brief
career: harmonious mingling of
the Catholic and classical, the
subjugation of the frigid uni–
verse of Marx and Freud to the
flaming sword of Christian char–
ity, with earnest of the newer
styles to (.ome--swift assonancr,
internal rhyme, banked passion,
the puns anticipating
Finnegans
Wake
by twenty years and Eliot
by ten, outbrittling all the Uni–
versity Wits before Spender had
traded bib for blazer.
Nothing beside remains. The
correspondence with Pound has
been impounded by the Customs
(pending proof of Pound's sanity
and treason)
as
possibly fascist,
certainly obscene. The poems
stand alone, proclaiming Green–
span.
Thus the assistant professor's
revery as work and sleep fought
for his weary mind. His eyes
opened, a vision fading fast of
the New Hampshire farm, the
hillside brook hemmed
