Greenspan's "Ignore the war!"–
they part (Geneva
1914),
Green–
span to Church and fame and
Lenin slyly to his mausoleum.
But all these facts, however my–
thopoeic, the assistant professor
resolutely shunned, turning to
closer study of the poems, so ripe,
so rotten-ripe for a revival. These
would provide critical articles to
win his chair, his Fulbright, and
his farm- biography his book–
length legacy.
In 1915 Greenspan sailed for
Greece, hoping to heal the faith–
destroying breach between the Or–
thodox and Roman churches. Dear
to the Pope, denounced by Mus–
solini, the poet's philanthropy
shines in the verses written on the
ill-starred steamer to Mount
Athos:

LAZARUS AND
DIVES
Purple stoles, surplices, mant–
ples manifold,
Valuable chasubles rich-stitched
in gold
Sy blear-eyed virgins purging
sins of pride
And fear of heaven that leav–
ens life tor the old.
Should these be rood-rags that
Christ's blood dyed,
The crook's-cloth vestments faT
which dicers vied?
And those the snow-white lambs
His passion laved,
The nine-and-ninety brides fOT
whom He died?
