the Metropolitan Life Insurance
Company hires a renowned aca–
demician, sets him up neatly with
virtually unlimited funds and
hordes of eager young graduate
students. Throwing open to him
the books and records, the historian
is startled at first by the realiza–
tion that no pressure is put upon
him. Facts need not be white–
washed, the whole story can be
told in the most minute aspect.
Gone are the days of the old Ida
Tarbell trustbusters. Standard Oil
becomes an American institution,
giving up its ugly libidinous in–
fancy for a stable maturity.
This field opens attractively to
.the younger students. Well-paid,
it offers to the beginner compensa–
tion at least equal to the instructor–
ship hopefully attained in a Mid–
western college or the larger metro–
politan universities.
If,
for example,
the U.S. Steel Corporation works
out its plan for such a project, it
will release upwards from one
hundred thousand dollars (tax
exempt) to be spent on research
and research workers. It is clean
work, where the trees are slowly
counted
till
the final day when
the entire forest may be assessed.
Till that day comes the historian
maintains his objectivity, taking
leave of this world till all sources
have been checked. Becoming a
sifter and refiner, he approaches
society in much the same way as
some modern critics approach
