created another
cas de conscience,
and a large number of young French
intellectuals in a rush of idealism, declared themselves to
be
both "res–
ponsible," and "committed." It is not surprising that Peguy became the
ideological symbol of the French resistance, and Peguy's heroes of the
Affaire,
"The perpetual
Dreyfusards,
mystic
Dreyfusards,
usually obscure"
usually poor .. . those who were silent; only their words counted," are
in
their own way the unhappy heroes of a greater part of the new litera–
ture in France today. Except for the doctrinaire Communist, the young
resistant writer has fallen into a tragic obsolescence, paralysed by the
nostalgia for a cause that might
be
defendable on intellectual and
artistic grounds.
