and I begin instantly to qualify it.
I went to school to Tchekov, Do–
stoyevsky, Mann, Mallarme, Celine,
Gide, Silone, Tolstoy, Freud, Flau–
bert, Proust,
J
oyee, Pascal. One
feels resentfully that caste is being
brought into it, that it is simply
none of their damned business. An
irrelevant detail which will be held
against one. One cannot get over
it. Those people who floated
through school like impervious
bubbles! Who haven't picked up,

in their relief, anything more com–
plicated than the
Ladies Horne
Journal
since they left. What are
the: great writers to them? the great
issues?
I realize precisely and with a
sligh t boredom beyond the stale
defenses why I feel as I do. I
shou ld have gone to university sim–
ply to rid myself of this reaction
of inferiority. But anyway, I still
cannot agree that the question is
appropriate or necessary.
