One must correct that
impression. The second part of
Time and Being
is written. It lies,
in manuscript, next to a work on
Nietzsche and the nature of nihil–
ism, next to a weighty manuscript
on logos, next to some ten or more
major philosophical works-all in
manuscript, all in the tiny skiing
hut, "over and above" being, arti–
ficially cut off from the world, with
the rain falling into the valley far
down below. The setting was very
Heideggerian. Perhaps that was the
way it had to be.
Originally the French, in whose
zone "Fribourg" is situated, had
thought of Heidegger as the glit–
tering jewel in their cultural
schemes. But the Germans ob–
jected. So did some French Com–
munists later on. The French au–
thorities consulted a venerable Ger–
man who should never have been
consulted because he was too close–
ly involved. As a result, Heidegger
was retired. When I mentioned the
incident in the
Manchester Guar–
dian
the French reacted, saying in–
dignantly that they had never for–
gotten Heidegger's past and the
gloom contained in his philosophy.
The Church authorities in Freiburg
sighed with relief: the man who
had denied God was out of the
reach of men. But Heidegger, with–
out a trace of vehemence, shook
his head and told me that they had
