The advertisements
in
this series, intended to describe in detail the stock
which we have brought together in our fields of specialization, have been getting
more and more wordy, and, in consequence, the type used by the printer has
been getting smaller and smaller. Probably the thrill of being a regular contri–
butor to PR (even though we were paying for that distinction) went to our
head. Anyway, in this last advertisement of the current series, we propose to use
fewer words and larger type to tell about our MUSIC collection.
The first thing to say is that we make a strenuous effort to eliminate nine–
tenths of what constitutes the Music Section in other stores. We do
not
have
popularized biographies of composers and performers. We do
not
have omnibus
volumes telling the stories of the operas. We do
not
have guidebooks to the en–
joyment of music. Put very briefly, we try to have serious works on the aesthetics
of music; standard biographies of really important composers and performers;
and worthwhile and informative studies of the development of music and musical
instruments. In this latter category, we are particularly interested in books which
offer specialized information; and we lean toward those dealing with ancient or
very modern music, on the theory that the intervening periods are rather thor–
oughly represented in other shops.
Special mention must be made of our section on JAZZ. This includes all
of the current titles; a good share of the out-of-print books in the field; and a
wide range of periodicals published in England, Ireland, France, Australia, and
the United States.
:
Inquiries are invited from those seeking specific Music books; if the desired
titles are not on our shelves, we will search for them and furnish quotations as
promptly as possible. Our monthly bulletin, listing and evaluating current publi–
cations, will be sent without obligation to anyone requesting it.
