shuffles the counters of his trade,
for whom the whole of logico–
poetic discourse consists of a few
"ideas" and the names and dates
which buzz in the head of the
perennial Ph.D. candidate.
The reader perceives from Stoll's
essay that in the
Journal of the
History of Ideas,
one may praise
fascism, take a swipe at the "for–
eign-born" in American politics,
vilify modern writers (from Joyce
to Crosby), and
in
general substi–
tute free association and anathema
for argument, and the
Journal
will
not bat an eye. There is neither
counterstatement nor endorsement
by the editors, there is no notice
that the opinions are Mr. Stoll's
own, and the magazine has no rec–
ognizable policy on controversial
issues which would allow one to
deduce its attitude toward what it
publishes.
It is significant that Lovejoy
prefaced his 1940 manifesto, which
dealt with purely academic tech–
niques, with a statement that these
were the author's own opinions.
Apparently one must be responsible
within the academy; outside of
it, one need not be.
