VARIETY
The thing to do is not retreat
Into fear or self-defeat,
But face up bravely, grasp the oar
And row as if we meant to soar.
Rich and meaningful'll be our acts
If
we make a theory to fit the facts!
III
Four-footed lines and couplet rhymes
Have served good poets other times;
Butler, Prior, Gay and Swift,
Miss Finch's models, had more gift;
A modern pattern, much her better
Is Wystan Auden's
New Year Letter,
And as for marriage, much more wit
's in Marianne Moore's poem on it.

Company at a dollar
Publish her with hue and holler,
But suchlike wisdom, by them cherished
Has for years in monthlies perished,
And her thesis is the kemel
Of a piece an issue in the
Ladies' Home Journal,
Couched like hers in terms ideal,
Dealing with the really real,
Fearing not our blacker side,
Exposing what we wish to hide,
Facing problems right and left,
At the newest terms adept.
Her theme may be "as old as man"
But her verse is just an "also ran,"
Easily read, though hardly written,
No work profound by inwit bitten,
And all in all it's just as well
Her
Essay on Marriage
will not
sell.
