studies. The former have directness of psychological grasp, and unity of
graphic rhythm. They are a sculptor's drawings only in a remote sense,
as Maillol's woodcuts are the work of a sculptor, and though one may
trace the connection it is nowhere obtrusive. The latter have the char–
acter of exploration, the suggestion of tentative, emerging form, and
the unfolding of the artist's purpose that refers us to the finished work.
Since the modern aesthetic demands respect of the flat picture surface
they may even be unsatisfactory as drawings
(i.e.,
as painter's drawings) ,
provided there is enough presence of the final three-dimensional vision.
(In a parallel way this is true of Rodin's drawings.) Thus one could wish
that some of this handsome collection were a bit less handsome, less
finished, less perfect. Moore himself has said that he is more interested
in power of expression than in beauty of expression. The best of these
drawings are those in which that power, to be expressed in the sculpture,
is the most suggested.
