112 poets • 21 nationalities • translations from 16 languages
In this book, for the first time, the great war poems of the world are assembled.
There have been anthologies of the two World Wars, and collections of national
poetry, but never before, drawing upon all countries and the whole of written
history, a collection of Man's profoundest utterances on the subject which has
aroused the noblest and the worst in his nature.
But WAR AND THE POET is more than a record of warning and protest. In–
cluding the best works of 112 poets representing 21 nationalities and writing in
16
languages. the editors have presented what is in effect an anthology, sharply
focussed to be sure, of world poetry as a whole. Each editor has contributed
an essay on war poetry, and the collection is rounded out with biographical notes
which probe into the areas necessarily passed over briefly.
The New York Times
Says:
"It
is a good book
to
read in the atomic after–
glow of the war. Its out–
standing
exc~llence
is
that it is a first-rate col–
lection of carefully select–
ed poems, and seldom a
bombastic celebration of
battle for its own sake...•
"There have been la–
ments that the poems
written about this war
have not been better and
more numerous. 'War and
the Poet' offers some en–
tries to refute that.•.•"
