A French Number
In the next issue of PARTISAN
REVIEW we shall present an an–
thology of significant French writ–
ing, selected in the light of two
distinct but obviously related aims.
We are concerned, first, to bring
to the attention of American read–
ers the French writers who have
asserted themselves since com–
munications with Paris were in–
terrupted in 1940, i.e., writers who
are little known in this country.
Within this group, PARTISAN
REVIEW will seek out those authors,
particularly, who affirm through
the excellence and originality of
their work, as through the per–
tinence of their ideas, the survival
of the vigorous, various, and es–
sentially modern French spirit.
This spirit has nothing in common
with the reactionary patriotism
which Louis Aragon turns on and
off like a radiator, according to the
temperature of the Soviet Foreign
Commissariat. Nor should it be
confused with the "logic" and
"universality" which are the chief
wares of the touching old ladies of
the
Alliance Francaise.
We make
no secret of our attachment to a
spirit
in
France, a spirit at once
partisan and skeptical, passionate
and disabused. This is a strain
which we recognize immediately
in writers like Queneau, Sartre,
Camus, Julien Gracq. It is at once
irritating and exalting, political
and literary. Pitched in our era of
wars and revolutions, its measure
and end is the human condition.
In addition to selections from the
PARTISAN REVIEW
above-named authors, our special
French number will include prose
and poetry by Simone de Beauvoir,
Claude-Edmonde Magny, Georges
Bataille, Rene Char, Guillevic,
Jean Genet, Blanchot, Francis
Ponge, Andre Frenaud and others.
