in the naivete and simplicity of pre-scientific socialism-a charm that
distracts us momentarily from the disquietude we feel over our presu–
mably wiser, modern hopes. But what is it that lends that other charm,
more like an evil, to irrationalism? What is its essential religious secret,
what, perhaps, its truth? And why, after all the disenchantment, does
the simplicity of the humanitarian ideal, the enlightenment, remain the
only possible earthly kingdom?

her approach, no formula, no indiscreet commitment to regret. She
