Troubleshooting
Mouse pointer is missing in VLAB after opening Metasploitable VM
When opening the Metasploitable VM, then clicking inside it will cause the mouse pointer to disappear, if you click outside the VLAB you will see your pointer in your computer, but when you click back inside the VLAB it is still gone.
This happens because Hyper-V will capture the mouse when clicking inside a VM window so it works inside that VM.
To release the mouse, use the keyboard combination specified in the Hyper-V window.
(This is while the mouse pointer is missing inside the vlab, if you see your mouse pointer in your computer outside the vlab, the key combination will not work, click inside the vlab so the mouse pointer disappears)
If using the keyboard combination to release the mouse does not work, or your keyboard does not have the necessary keys (like MACs missing the Alt key), a good workaround is to launch the task manager.
To do so, hover your mouse to the top of the VLAB window, until you see a black bar with options.
Select “CTRL+ALT+DELETE”
This opens a menu, select task manager.
Now the mouse pointer is available inside the VLAB.
Be careful not to click inside the metasploitable VM and trapping your pointer again, you can issue commands in the metasploitable VM by just clicking the window bar top and not inside the VM window.
Changing the Key combination to release mouse
Alternatively, you can change the key combination used to release the mouse from the VM.
Do this before you launch the Metasploitable VM.
- Click on the Hyper-V Settings
- Select Mouse Release Key option
- Choose another Key combination that will work for your computer
