Brain function requires proper networking and communication between neurons at the synapse. Altered synaptic formation and function during brain development underlie severe learning disabilities in children. In addition, synaptic dysfunction and loss are early key events in neurodegenerative disorders. The overall goal of our research is to understand the molecular and cellular basis of synaptic function associated with neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration. Our research group employs interdisciplinary approaches that include molecular genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, functional imaging and electrophysiology.
