IHI Partners with American Heritage Museum to co-host lectures and colloquia
The International History Institute and the American Heritage Museum have agreed to a long-term partnership to co-host author book talks and colloquia on matters of joint interest. The partnership will cap off the 2021 year with a December 4th commemoration and consideration of the 80th Anniversary of the week of the Pearl Harbor attack, to be held on the floor of the museum with the backdrop of a restored P-40 aircraft that was at Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7, 1941.
December 4, 2021: Conference on 80th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor
IHI will co-host, in cooperation with the American Heritage Museum, a public conference on the 80th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The event will take place on the floor of the museum, with the backdrop of a recently acquired and fully restored P-40 fighter that was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. https://www.
August 19, 2021: “No Greater Love: Sacrificing to Save Enemy Lives in WWII”
IHI Director Cathal Nolan, at the AHM in Hudson. The talk draws on a chapter from his forthcoming book Decency: Morality and Mercy in Wartime (Oxford UP, 2022).
2022 Speaker Series: Getting to Peace
IHI will co-host, in cooperation with the American Heritage Museum, a speaker series on military history with a twist from the usual focus on war origination and war fighting: how do wars end? How does one transition to diplomacy, to get back to peace while in the midst of an ongoing war?
IHI to Host Fulbright Postdoc
IHI will host a Fulbright Scholar as a Visiting Researcher in 2021. Dr. Ayşegül Avci is a member of the American Culture and Literature Department at Bilkent University in Ankara. While at IHI he will carry out research in the greater Boston area on his book project, Yankee Engineers: The American Chapter of Ottoman Naval Modernization.
Cathal Nolan Wins Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History announced today that Cathal Nolan has been awarded the fifth annual Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History at the New-York Historical Society for The Allure of Battle: A History of How Wars Have Been Won and Lost (Oxford University Press). The $50,000 prize is bestowed annually in recognition of the best book in the field of military history published in English during the previous calendar year. A program celebrating the winner and the shortlisted authors will take place on Monday, November 26, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. at the New-York Historical Society.
