The application process for the first cohort is now closed. Decisions will be made by early March, and training begins in summer 2025.
The ENERGIZE gradate training program in sustainable energy conversion and storage is open to all Boston University graduate students.
Trainees will participate in collaborative research and community events, including seminars, workshops, and an annual symposium. Workshops include professional development skills, and computational, data science and experimental skills in materials science.
Trainees are also able to apply for travel and research funds to support their studies.

Eligibility
Current BU graduate students (MS and PhD) in ENG, CAS, and CDS are welcome to apply. Both domestic and international students are eligible to be trainees. A subset of trainees will be invited to be NRT Fellows and receive 2 years of stipend support. These fellows must be U.S. citizens with at least 2 years remaining in their studies. PLEASE NOTE – All BU graduate students are eligible to apply to be a trainee; the 2-year requirement is to be considered for stipend support.
Application Requirements
Trainees should submit their resume, transcript, a personal statement, and letter of recommendation from your research advisor. The personal statement should address:
- Discuss how your research integrates with the themes of the ENERGIZE National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) and how you will benefit from the NRT.
- How does your work incorporate experimental, computational, and data science through your individual work or as part of a collaboration? What is your approach to collaboration?
