Muhammad Asif, a Visiting Researcher at Boston University’s Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS), is a Professor of Architectural Engineering at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia. Prior to joining KFUPM, he was a faculty member at various European universities for 12 years. He is a Fellow of the Energy Institute, a Chartered Environmentalist, a Chartered Engineer, a Certified Energy Manager, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Asif’s research interests include energy transition, renewable energy, energy management, and sustainable buildings. He has also worked extensively in the areas of energy and environmental security, particularly in the context of developing countries. He has frequently served as a consultant and advisor to public and private sector organizations across Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. He has presented his work at over 75 international conferences and has delivered keynote and plenary talks at numerous forums. He is the author/editor of eight books, including Handbook of Energy Transitions and The 4Ds of Energy Transition: Decarbonization, Decentralization, Decreasing Use, and Digitalization.

During his research fellowship, Asif will work closely with IGS Director Benjamin Sovacool on decarbonization of the building sector across different regions of the world. The research will investigate region-specific dynamics before conducting a global comparative analysis to develop insightful pathways toward a low-carbon built environment.
