Ellen Dong

Communications Assistant

Ellen Dong is a Communications Assistant at the Institute for Global Sustainability. As an undergraduate journalism and data science major, Dong’s interests focus on using data analysis tools to inform her reporting and writing. Throughout her time as a journalism student, she has covered arts, culture, science, and international news beats. Primarily, she is a broadcast news reporter, but Dong has also worked in audio and print writing. Dong hopes to continue to grow her skills in news reporting by finding ways to use her data analysis focus to further uncover the truth.

Through her work as a data science student, Dong has participated in various projects focusing on equity, marketing, and research. She has worked at the Ramos Research Institute where she was responsible for using data analysis tools on survey information to visualize and draw trends on political data. In addition, she has also worked as a guerrilla marketing team member at Popple to help evaluate the startup’s marketing strategies through data analysis and come up with new campaigns.

Continuing her time at Boston University, Dong plans to use her writing and analytical skills to better uncover hidden trends in Boston and beyond. She plans to engage in more broadcast journalism projects focusing on science, technology, and arts/culture coverage as well as take on more data analysis projects focused on policy and equity. Currently, she writes for BUTV’s The Wire, The Daily Free Press, and WTBU Radio. Through her time at BU, Dong hopes to develop her reporter’s instinct and data examination abilities.
